Home

As my last day here narrows down to just hours, I have to say this was needed and very much necessary. I admit I didn't do a lot of photography outings, but that wasn't my main reason for being here.

I had an excellent trip, with memories for a lifetime. This was my home for many years, and it felt good.

So, with an extra special thank you to Mikey and Rosie, and of course Layla, I pack up all my stuff (how did that all fit in on the way up?) take a last look around, and at 8 tonight, get on a plane to the flood zone... and life.

Stayin' Alive

So I'm still alive, and still in Alaska. I've spent a couple days just sitting back and relaxing in Mikey and Rosie's house.

One of my best friends from college who lives up here came up from Homer and visited for a few days, and we just spent a lot of time talking, driving around town and hitting some of our old haunts, and talking more. Rosie of course just loved having Didi around, and Didi loved talking to Rosie about cooking, the house, and Australia.

I went to the market and did a touch of shopping. This evening I helped Rosie put together one of Mikey's birthday presents. He'll be home tomorrow from Miami, just in time for his birthday.

Here is a picture Didi gave me from when I used to live here before of her and I together. This was Halloween about 10 years ago... Be sure to check out my eyes closely. :)

It's A Sunshine Day

In case there was any doubt about the whole midnight sun thing...

This was taken at 3am last night.

I for one am thankful for thick curtains!

All Night Long

Went out to the club last night with Mikey. It was pretty neat to see everyone, but a little amusing to see the same people sitting on the same barstools as they were 7 years ago when I left.

As Mikey was drinking, I did the driving, and that was actually pretty fun to be driving in Anchorage again. It felt natural, and I was kinda surprised at how well I fell right back into getting around.

Slept in a little this morning, and now I'm just kicking back until the rest of the state wakes up.

I'm having to do a slight change of plans. Due to the flooding in Iowa, I'm not going to be able to rent a car and drive to Homer to visit Diane as planned. Ah well. No such thing as a perfect vacation, but it's pretty close!

FLOOD UPDATE
Cheryl's dad came over to help back home and the bottom foot of the garage walls are now torn out and they are working on figuring out how to waterproof it when they redo it.

Thank you Cheryl's Dad!!

Over The Rainbow

So there wasn't a tornado at home in Iowa, but definitely left a mess...

How annoying...

Animal

There was a couple of hours of sun yesterday evening so a friend picked me up and we took a drive. We ended up out at his place where he lives with his partner and elderly parents.

We were sitting up in the upstairs chatting while I was attempting to fix his Vista computer (yeah, don't go there) and I looked up just in time to see a mid-size black bear go trotting through the neighborhood.

OMG!! BEAR!! Hide the kids!! No, not that one, the other one.

Unfortunately he moved to fast and I wasn't able to snap a pic of him, but that is my first official bear sighting (four legged variety) in Alaska, ever.

It looks like it may actually clear up today, and if I'm lucky I may get a chance to go out and about again.

IOWA UPDATE: More storms today. It seems that today, a really huge branch busted off the big tree in the front of the house and landed in the middle of the driveway.

Really?

Can I please go on vacation without the apocalypse striking my house? That would be great, thanks.

Ain't To Proud To Beg

Today was domestic day. I figured I'd bring one week worth of clothes rather than 3 weeks, so laundry needed to be done.

It's amazing the sheer amount of crap TV that is on during the day. Seriously? A marathon of America's Top Model? Really?

Thank god for HD movie channels...

Had an incredible meal of baked salmon and dirty rice, wow...

And this is the result of when you cook like this

This is Layla, with Ross in the background. She's a beggar, and has finally decided tonight that I'm not a threat. It took a little bribing of course, with small bits of bacon.

Tomorrow the sun should be back out, as it was another cool rainy day here. I'm hoping to get out and do some good photography tomorrow with the big camera.

FLOOD UPDATE: So there was about a foot of water in the garage at home it seems, and Cheryl's car took in some flooding too. Dan and Lisa came over last night with the wetvac and helped clean up what was left in the garage. THANK YOU Dan and Lisa!! Frank says that it looks like the water was in and out so fast that we got lucky. They did bleach the walls and stuff today to prevent mold from growing. A couple loads of stuff had to go to the dump though. Ah well. Things like that can be replaced, and I obviously didn't miss it as it sat in the garage for a year.

Peace...

One Day in your Life

So I missed a day... Sue me.

Had a great day yesterday, despite the cool rainy weather. Mikey and Rosie had a small dinner party with a few friends which was nice. I've decided that curry can be a good thing if done right.

Mikey took me to a sushi buffet for lunch, that was good.

It's finally raining here which is good cuz you could smell a hint of smoke from all the forest fires.

Now, if only it would stop raining back home. Turns out there was a flash flood and Ralston Creek turned my house into an island this morning. It stopped just shy of entering the house, but not the garage. Frank is keeping an eye on it and is pulling the electronics from the ground floor.

Yikes!!!!

Downtown

Another gorgeous day here, this is going to spoil me.

We went to the Weekend Market downtown today, had some great food, and checked out the crafts and produce there.

The sun was incredible today, and I was going to see a movie with friends, but we decided against it cuz it was so nice out. It was pretty cool to see all the new things up here now. The most exciting thing, TARGET is here now!! OMG!!!!

I know, sad, shut up.

When I got home, we had a great dinner, I forgot what an awesome cook Rosie is but damn...

After dinner, I stepped out back and took a nice panoramic of the back yard as the weather was still incredible.

Anyway, off to bed here in a couple hours I think.

Peace...

Ice ice baby....

Took a drive out Turnagin Arm.

Saw a bore tide.

Now, Rosie is making lamb.

It's a good day...

Welcome to the Jungle

Good morning!

Mental note, do NOT leave your cell phone on when you're three hours behind most of the people you know on your birthday. At 5am, I was awakened to an inundation of "ting... ting... ting... ting" as the Facebook notifications, SMSs, and emails started coming in for birthday wishes. Yeah, THAT didn't last.

The threat of rain that existed is gone, replaced by an incredibly sunny day here. It's only 9am, and it's already 60 degrees out. I'm sitting out on Mikey and Rosie's back deck typing this as it is.

While Rosie and I sat up talking after Mikey went to bed last night, I noticed the sudden dive-bombing from seagulls in the front yard. I tried to get a good pic of them, but don't think that worked too well. I'm gonna try for better this weekend, as Rosie told me that it happens every night.

Today, I think the game plan is going for a nice drive, now that I'm all recovered and chipper after that godawful flight.

Mikey has been teaching me stuff about landscaping plants, and it's been fun, especially since the new house came pre-landscaped without instructions, leaving Frank and I scratching our heads as to what to do with some of them.

And here... is a glimpse of the side entrance into Mikey and Rosie's house...

Wait'll you see the REST of the yard.

Peace ...

Cuz I'm a wanderer

It was a really nice afternoon out, so I decided to take a walk around and head up to Fred Meyers to pick up a few things.

I lucked out by having no moose encounters, as it was a bit of a long walk. It was a very nice day out though. Cloudy, and about 60 degrees.

It felt good to be walking through Anchorage again, just very comfortable. I've been in touch with a few old friends, who I hope to see in person soon.

And I promise to stop answering work emails...

Good morning Alaska!

Well, due to the fact that I'm mildly jet lagged, I woke up at 8 local time.

The sun is shining, and it's a balmy 55 degrees.

No real plans for the day yet, but I'm enjoying not having a thing to do. I'll probably go wandering at some point and just soak it all up!

I made it!!!

So I made it here.

This pic is taken at 11pm.

It's good to be here. :)

Leaving on a jet plane

So, I'm now at the airport, watching a storm roll in with Julian Lennon playing over the musak. In a little over an hour I'll be boarding for my flight to Detroit.

Hopefully, the storm will pass by then...
